Hyakudayu: the (Japanese) myth of the first puppeteer

The presentation will focus on the birth of the tradition of three-person puppet manipulation.
Simon Moers will discuss the history and development of this tradition, from the original myth to the Osaka National Bunraku Theatre, as he encountered it during his work in Japan. He will also present the work of the Japanese artist Kanroku (former master puppeteer of the Osaka Bunraku), who will be present on Saturday 12 October with ESNAM students. Since 2020, Simon has been training in the three-way manipulation technique with Kanroku and his company Mokugusha.
