This presentation will bring to a close a week and a half of building Lyon-based glove puppets, directed by Ombline de Benque, and four weeks of learning to practice with Brice Coupey. Brice Coupey will be sharing the ‘choral work’ carried out by the 16 students..

  • The aims of this 2nd stage of the course on the lyonnaise tube:
  • To develop a mastery of playing with and manipulating the lyonnaise girdle in a castelet, alone and in a group.

Develop an awareness of the physical commitment required, the possibilities, specificities and limits of the girdle, the tenuous link between the manipulator and the object outside him, the interaction between puppets (or objects) and the codes for playing with others in the performance space used.

Brice Coupey has been exploring contemporary repertoire through puppetry and object theatre for 20 years. Initially an actor, he discovered puppetry with Alain Recoing in 1999. Since then he has worked under the direction of directors with whom he has most often shared a part of the journey: Dominique Houdart, Alain Recoing, Pierre Blaise, Alain Lecucq, Luc Laporte, Nicolas Goussef, Hubert Jegat, Agnès Renaud and Sylvain Maurice.

He develops his own creations through the Compagnie l’Alinéa, in which he favours the blending of puppetry with other arts. A specialist in glove puppetry, he teaches at the Théâtre aux Mains Nues school and in training courses in France and Europe.

He has been a regular instructor at ESNAM since 2015. He was director of training there from 2019 to 2021 before returning to his first love.

Trained in the plastic arts and puppet theatre, Ombline de Benque enriched her practice with Alain Recoing (Théâtre aux Mains Nues) and Philippe Genty. Founder of the Cie Stratégies du Poisson in 2001, she has explored a variety of stage forms, performing in France and abroad.

Winner of the Pépinières Européennes in 2006-2007, she has directed and collaborated with a number of companies. Since 2009, she has been developing multidisciplinary creations with dancer Katia Petrowick, in the Cie l’Embellie Musculaire, giving rise to several shows and performances: Système A.R.T., Pull Over, Mon Grand-père, Kaïros.

She has worked with the 12th and 13th classes at ESNAM.
