The students of ESNAM’s 14th class are concluding their second year with a production loosely based on Witold Gombrowicz’s play The Marriage, directed by Natacha Belova.

In The Marriage, Gombrowicz orchestrates a ceremony where the figures of authority (the king, the father, the god) merge into a tragic and grotesque delirium. Language collapses, the statutes are overturned, logic is exhausted. He shows that humans are both prisoners of social forms and accomplices to their own alienation. This theatre of distorted forms offers a rich field of exploration for puppetry: a space of metamorphosis, of tension between the static and the living, between controlled form and unbridled expression.

During a six-week period, the students explored the themes of chaos, power, and human relationships. Constantly moving between work at the table, on the stage and in the workshops, they collectively conceived and created this project: experimenting with materials, stage work, visual and dramaturgical research…
