Teaching
The course at ESNAM lasts 3 years and is divided into 6 semesters:
First year
Fundamental teaching
The first year aims to establish a common base of skills in the construction and manipulation of puppets and objects, while exploring the work of the body in space. Students are introduced to a variety of manipulation techniques, both traditional and contemporary (girdle, shadow, etc.). The learning process is supported by regular practice, linking dramaturgy with acting… This year encourages a spirit of collective adventure.
Second year
Further study
The aim of the second year is to consolidate what has been learnt technically, while allowing students to discover and develop new playing instruments. This year includes work with stage directors, giving students the opportunity to broaden their palette while putting their performing skills to work on original artistic projects. The aim is to give them the opportunity to approach the creative process in its entirety (dramaturgy, construction, set design, stage techniques, etc.).
Third year
Experimentation and creation
The third year enables students to mobilise all the skills they have acquired, as well as those in complementary fields, and put them to use in one or more creative projects (solo work, possibly a ‘carte blanche’, a graduation show involving the whole class, etc.). The aim of this final year of the course is to provide students with the essential tools they need to find their place in their chosen professional environment, while completing and deepening their training.
Throughout the course, the end-of-course productions, solo exercises and collective creations give rise to public performances, which are all demanding teaching opportunities that enable students to put themselves into professional situations.
The following subjects are also covered: administration, management, knowledge of cultural policies and networks, critical analysis of shows, history of the performing arts and modern languages. In years 2 and 3, students are also required to do a work placement in a company and a work placement in a performing arts organisation in order to prepare for their future career.
Students have permanent access to the Pôle International de la Marionnette – Jacques Félix documentation centre.
